Can You Still Make an Offer? Listing Statuses, Explained

A listing goes through various stages before it’s sold or taken off the market. Our handy guide defines all the statuses so you know whether you can still make an offer.

What do these listing statuses mean?

Status Definition Can you make an offer?
Coming Soon (CS) The house is going to be available soon. Depends on state regulations
New (NEW) A just-listed property that’s been on the market for less than a week. Yes
Active (ACT) The property is available for sale and is taking showings. Yes
Price Change (PCG) The listed price of the property has recently changed within the past few days. Yes
Active Option (OPTION, OPT or AO) The seller has accepted an offer, and the buyer is exercising their option period. Yes, the seller is taking backup offers and showing the home.
Active Contingent (CONT or CON) The seller has accepted an offer, but the offer is contingent upon the sale of the buyer’s current home. Yes, the seller is taking backup offers and showing the home.
Active Kick-Out (KO) The seller has accepted an offer but is reserving the right to “kick out” the current bid if presented with a better offer. Yes, the seller is taking backup offers and showing the home.
Pending Backup Offers (PBD) The seller has accepted an offer from the buyer but is open to additional offers. Yes, the seller is taking backup offers and showing the home.
Pending (PND) The seller and the buyer have agreed to the purchase terms, and the property is moving towards closing. No, unless the deal falls through and the property is back on the market (BOM).
Temporarily off the Market (TOM) The home has been taken off of the market for a short time, typically to make repairs. No
Back on Market (BOM) The home is available again, usually after a deal has fallen through. Yes
Withdrawn (WTH or WDN) The home is off the market and no longer available for showings. No
Expired (EXP) The agreement between the seller and the listing agent has expired. No
Canceled (CAN) The home is off the market and no longer available for showings. No
Sold (SLD) The listing has sold and closed. No
